Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles

If you are wanting to remain in your wheelchair while being transported, a wheelchair accessible vehicle may be the best option for you.  Wheelchair accessible vehicles can all you to drive or ride from a wheelchair.  Today, there are many options for wheelchair accessible vehicles including full size vans with lifts, minivans, SUVs and trucks.

There are a few things to consider when searching for a wheelchair accessible vehicle.

  1. Will the wheelchair user be a driver or passenger? Not all wheelchair accessible vehicles will accommodate a driver.
  2. What are the wheelchair user's key dimensions?  The height/width and weight of the wheelchair user and wheelchair will determine ability to enter, exit and maneuver within the vehicle.
  3. Who needs to be transported in the van and where will it be parked/garaged.  Some vehicles will only support a limited amount of additional passengers.  Also, depending on side of garage the ramp or lift may not be able to be deployed inside.
  4. Are there important key features that you want/would like in the vehicle?  Features available on some vehicles include leather, back up camera, navigation, power sliding doors, satellite radio, sunroof, DVD player and removable seats.
  5. Working with a budget?  Your budget is also an important first consideration in the buying process.  Do you have a maximum that you can or want to spend?  What monthly payment would you be comfortable with?  Are there outside funding sources you will be using?
